Learning and development

During the graduate program you will undertake a range of on-the-job development activities, which are supported by formal, off-the-job training events. The suite of learning and development activities includes a fully accredited Diploma of Government course, with workshops facilitated internally and a selection of external training courses. The training is designed to develop your capability and understanding of working in the Australian Public Service (APS).

A structured training plan will be developed for you, which will form part of your Performance Support Agreement (PSA). The training plan will include:

  • induction program
  • Diploma of Government courses
  • Knowing the Business activities.

Induction program

The first week of your employment with Medicare Australia will include formal induction training.

You will:

  • meet your buddy, supervisor, mentor and fellow graduates
  • be introduced to Senior Executive members from across the portfolio
  • hear presentations from Senior Managers within the organisation to give you a better understanding of how the agencies and Department work together to achieve their objectives and provide services to the Australian community
  • tour the building/s
  • meet the team members in your work area
  • be allocated computer logons, a telephone number and a security pass
  • complete some of the training modules in the Diploma of Government

be taken on a tour of Canberra.

Diploma of Government

The Diploma of Government training modules include:

  • Compliance with Legislation
  • Workplace Safety
  • Provide Leadership
  • Manage Personal Priorities and Professional Development
  • Conduct Presentations
  • Emotional Intelligence
  • Facilitate Change

The completion of the Diploma of Government within the 12 month graduate program is compulsory in order to advance from the graduate program.

Knowing the Business

As well as participating in the mandatory training you will also complete Knowing the Business activities which provide you the opportunity to see how a Medicare/Centrelink/Child Support Agency office aswell as Information, Call and Processing Centres operate.

Other courses

Other courses relevant to your work area can be discussed with your supervisor and be included as part of your Performance Support Agreement (PSA).

ICT graduates will be required to complete Core ICT training as well.
