As one of the largest and most efficient health benefit and information processing agencies in the world, Medicare Australia has a connection with every Australian resident, every doctor and every pharmacy and with many other members of the health and IT sector.
It processes more than 400 million transactions each year, paying benefits of approximately $17 billion per year at exceptional levels of efficiency with administrative expenses only 3% of total turnover. There are almost 4,500 staff, supporting service through a network of 238 Medicare offices, over 1000 Medicare Australia Access Points in pharmacies and rural transaction centres, national telephone claiming, call centres and online services.
Medicare Australia also detects and prevents fraud and inappropriate servicing and is playing a key role in the development of Australia’s health payments and information for the future, including a range of ambitious and innovative health and eHealth initiatives.
Medicare Australia has a proud history of high customer satisfaction results measured independently each year, such as over 90% for consumers, and a range of national and international awards.
